Hi Everyone - I’m very excited to meet some of you next week at New Media Summit! Warren and I are learning a ton as we continue to scale up and experiment with the newsletter.
This week:
A current status update for the week
Micro tests we are running
Meta Ads Update
What we are working on
Weekly Update

This week we added 156 subscribers, down 24 from last week. Our new Meta ad set didn’t perform as well as I had hoped. I just launched another one yesterday and I’m hoping to see better results with that (more on this in the Meta Ads section).
We finished our lead magnet which I’m very excited about. The lead magnet is a 20 page guide with all of the free resources I could find for Austin Entrepreneurs. This includes grant and funding programs, education, legal and tax aid, etc.
We are hoping this will do a few things: (1) Encourage people to read our welcome email more and fill out our survey (2) Increase our closeness with our user base.
Micro Tests
My background is in data science, so I love myself a good A/B test. One of the biggest challenges with any testing is balancing how many tests you run with the amount of data you’re able to collect.
I think we have developed a good system for this. We are giving ourselves about 2 weeks to test new things and see if they are worth including. In a newsletter, the tests generally have pretty low risk.
Things we have tested so far:
Sponsorship outreach - Email vs linkedin, different messages, etc.
Sponsorship inbound (via Survey)
Business Directory
Subject Lines
Q&A Interviews
PPC vs Flat rate payment structure
Landing Page (In Progress)
20+ different meta creatives
Things we are planning to test:
Second day of the newsletter (Founder Fridays)
Low-ticket product offerings (<$20 guides for people looking to start businesses in Austin)
Paid community
Discounts / affiliates for community
Sparkloop
Email optimizations
What is your favorite way to monetize a newsletter?
Meta Ads Update (New creative strategy)
Last week’s meta ad was a flop unfortunately. We tried the new creative angles, music, copy, and headlines. Unfortunately I think a pure creative refresh is in order.
I decided to go a different direction with the creative this week. I did my first voiceover with multiple different cut scenes. I did one creative with all walking shots and one with some shots of people congregating mixed in.
You can find the ads here if you’re interested.
Next Week’s Initiatives
We did a good job crushing last week’s initiatives (Lead magnet & sponsorship calendar)
This week we are focusing on:
Sharing lead magnet with our audience
Creating an affiliate page
Discounts on events for our Subscribers
Thanks for reading. Feel free to respond to this email with any advice or questions!
Until next week,
Ken
